When your audited accounts and your tax return disagree

September 8, 2026 · Practical guidance for UAE businesses

A common and avoidable UAE problem: the audited financial statements say one thing and the Corporate Tax return says another. Both were prepared in good faith. They disagree because they were prepared separately, months apart, from data that moved in between.

How the gap opens

The usual sequence: draft accounts are used to prepare the tax computation, the auditor then proposes adjustments, the adjustments are posted to the accounts, and nobody revisits the tax figures. The audited profit is now different from the profit the return was built on.

Other causes are more mundane. A different trial balance version, a late-posted journal, or an audit adjustment agreed verbally and never written back.

Why it matters

Corporate Tax starts from accounting profit prepared under acceptable standards. If the accounts on file show one profit and your return was computed on another, you are inviting a question you cannot answer neatly. Discrepancies between filed documents are exactly the pattern that draws scrutiny, and the explanation always has to be reconstructed long after everyone has forgotten the detail.

Fixing the sequence

  • Finalise the audit before finalising the tax computation, where deadlines allow
  • Where they do not, build the computation from a specific dated trial balance and record which one
  • Carry every audit adjustment through to the tax position explicitly, rather than assuming it washes out
  • Keep a reconciliation between audited profit and taxable income, showing each adjustment and why

That reconciliation is the deliverable

It is a single schedule: audited profit, then each add-back and deduction, arriving at taxable income. It takes an hour to maintain and permanently answers a question that is otherwise expensive to answer years later. Where we handle both audit preparation and the Corporate Tax return, it is produced as a matter of course.
