Choosing accounting software in the UAE: a practical comparison

September 8, 2026 · Practical guidance for UAE businesses

There is no single best accounting package for UAE businesses, but there are wrong choices for particular situations. The criteria that matter here are narrower than the feature lists suggest.

What to judge it on

  • Proper UAE VAT handling, including reverse charge on imports and correct treatment of zero-rated and exempt supplies
  • Tax invoice output carrying every required field, including your TRN
  • Multi-currency, if you buy or sell outside the UAE
  • Inventory, if you hold stock, which rules out several otherwise good options
  • Readiness for structured e-invoicing, given the mandate arriving from 2027
  • Whether your accountant can work in it without a fight

The realistic shortlist

Zoho Books handles UAE VAT well out of the box and is usually the cheapest credible option, which makes it common among small service businesses. Xero has the best interface and a wide app ecosystem, but inventory is basic and you will often bolt on a third-party tool. QuickBooks sits in similar territory with strong reporting. Sage suits businesses that have outgrown the small-business tier. Odoo is the option when accounting is one module among several, typically for trading and manufacturing businesses wanting inventory, sales and operations in one system, at the cost of a real implementation project.

Excel is a decision, not a default

Spreadsheet bookkeeping is workable at very small scale and becomes a liability the moment you register for VAT. There is no audit trail, no enforced double entry, and no reliable link between a transaction and its supporting document. Under structured e-invoicing it stops being viable at all.

Migration timing

Move at the start of a financial year or a VAT period, never mid-period. Migrating halfway through leaves you reconciling two systems for one return, which costs more than waiting.

We work in whichever of these you already use. See accounting and bookkeeping.
